Carpeting is one of the best flooring materials for many rooms in your home. Along with being soft underfoot and adding warmth to a room, carpets come in a wide range of different types and colors to perfectly complement the rest of your décor.
The only problem is choosing a carpet! With all of those options comes a tough choice. Luckily, we’re here to help. Keep reading to learn things to consider when you’re replacing your old, dirty carpets.
Main carpeting materials
A few materials dominate the carpeting world these days. Here are the most common materials you’ll find when shopping for new carpeting:
- Wool: With a luxurious feel and resistance to soil, wool is recognized as one of the top natural carpeting materials. Wool also retains its appearance after years of carpet cleaning. You can also get carpets made with a mixture of wool and synthetic fibers to help reduce costs.
- Nylon: If you have pets and kids running around, you may want to stick with a synthetic carpeting material. Nylon is durable, easy to clean and one of the best options for high-traffic areas. Many carpets come in a blend of 80 percent wool and 20 percent nylon.
- Polypropylene: Another synthetic option that holds up well to wear and tear is polypropylene. You’ll often find this material used in twist, loop piles and Saxony carpet types.
Different types of carpet
In addition to picking out a material and a color, you’ll need to choose a style of carpet that fits your home and lifestyle. These are a few popular types to consider:
- Berber: With its short loops, Berber carpet is a perfect option for high-traffic areas or playrooms that are bound to see plenty of wear and tear. Berber resists stains and comes in a wide variety of finishes to match any home.
- Shag: Although it’s not as common as it once was, shag carpeting still appeals to homeowners who put comfort above all else. Shag is a deep-cut pile, so it’s not very easy to maintain. That said, it feels incredibly soft underfoot. If you’re not careful with shag, you’ll be dealing with dirty carpets all the time.
- Plush pile: As the name suggests, plush pile carpeting is one of the softest types on the market. It is a cut-pile carpet with short fibers, creating a velvet-like texture. The biggest downside of plush pile is that it’s not very stain resistant, so we don’t recommend it for living rooms or areas that see a lot of action.
- Saxony: For a bedroom or living room, Saxony is always a good choice. It features longer, textured fibers that provide the cozy feel many homeowners adore. Saxony carpet dents fairly easily, though, so it’s not ideal for rooms where furniture gets moved around a lot.
